Fallen Avatar, Healer Guide

Updated 5 years, 11 months ago for patch 7.3.2 by Preston. View the change log.

Fallen Avatar Dungeon Journal ModelThis page covers a healer-focused strategy for the Fallen Avatar in the Tomb of Sargeras. While it's tailored for healers, other roles may also find the information useful. If you have any suggestions or feedback, you can leave a comment below or tweet @PrestonDvorak.

This guide has been updated and maintained based on my own experiences with the fight as well as Dungeon Journal information. I'll continue to update it as-needed.

 General Mechanics and Abilities

Normal and Heroic

This is a two stage fight during which you'll be fighting the Fallen Avatar and a corrupted Maiden of Valor.

Stage One - a slumber disturbed

During this stage, you'll be fighting the Fallen Avatar, who's stationary at the front of the room, as well as the Maiden of Valor who can be freely moved.

  • Fallen Avatar
    • The tanks will be dealing with Desolate.
    • When Rupture Realities is cast, run away from Fallen Avatar to mitigate the damage you take.
    • Periodically, all players will be affected by Unbound Chaos.
      • Everyone will need to move out of their own explosion zones while avoiding other player's zones. The best way to do this is usually for all players to run straight back.
    • Shadowy Blades will start at the boss and point at random players, dealing moderate damage to anyone they hit.
      • Targeted players can "aim" the blades in a different direction if necessary.
      • On Heroic, being hit by a blade leaves a puddle of Lingering Darkness.
    • Ripple of Darkness is used if no players are in melee range of the Fallen Avatar.
    • At 100 energy, the Fallen Avatar uses Consume, healing for an amount proportional to the health remaining on the Maiden of Valor.
      • This will also trigger Stage Two.
      • Ideally, the Fallen Avatar will never reach 100 energy until the Maiden is dead.
    • On Heroic, the three Touch of Sargeras fissures need to be soaked by enough players to split the damage so it isn't fatal.
      • A single player can soak one of these with an immunity or strong damage mitigation cooldown if needed.
  • Maiden of Valor
    • At 100 energy, the Maiden uses Cleansing Protocol, placing a large damage absorption shield on herself.
      • The shield needs to be damaged to cause Malfunction, which interrupts the cast and damages the Maiden.
    • If the Maiden is inside the matrix beam (explained below), she gains Matrix Empowerment.
  • Containment Pylon
    • Corrupted Matrix sends a beam to the Fallen Avatar from one of the five pylons positioned in an arc around the room, granting him energy every 12-seconds.
      • The Maiden of Valor should be moved to block this beam, causing her to gain the energy instead.

Stage Two - an avatar awakened

Upon reaching 100 energy, the Fallen Avatar shatters the floor and plunges the group deeper into the Tomb.

  • Rupture Realities is still used in this stage, and now destroys a portion of the ground.
  • The tanks will still be dealing with Desolate.
  • Stack with the players affected by Dark Mark to split the damage dealt.
    • This knocks players in the circle away from the affected player, be sure to position yourself to not be knocked back into lava.
  • Sear deals constant, light damage to everyone in the group.
    • On Heroic, the Fallen Avatar gains stacks of Fel Infusion while in lava.
  • On Heroic, avoid  (42017) circles.

Mythic Differences

Stage One - a slumber disturbed

  • Fallen Avatar
  • Containment Pylon
    • Tainted Matrix sends a beam to the Fallen Avatar, increasing his energy generation. If the Maiden of Valor stands in this beam, it deals heavy damage to all players.
      • If a player stands in this beam, it deals increasing damage over time and applies stacks of Tainted Essence.Reaching 10-stacks of Tainted Essence instantly kills the affected player.

Healing Strategy

Quick Notes, All Difficulties

Stage One - a slumber disturbed

  • Rupture Realities causes light to heavy damage to the group, depending how far away each player gets.
  • Players who fail to move out of Unbound Chaos will require moderate to heavy healing.
  • Players targeted by Shadowy Blades will need heavy healing, as well as any player hit by the blades.

Stage Two - an avatar awakened

  • Rupture Realities causes light to heavy damage to the group, depending how far away each player gets.
  • Dark Mark deals light to moderate damage to the players stacked inside it, depending how many total players are there.
  • Sear deals constant, light damage to the group.
    • On Heroic, be aware of the increased damage as it's buffed by Fel Infusion.

In-depth Notes, Normal and Heroic

Consider this section in "beta." My goal is to lay out the order of events without necessarily providing an entire strategy for all roles (other sites do that already). The idea being it should help organize your cooldowns or pre-healing. Feedback is greatly appreciated as Tomb of Sargeras is my first time attempting something like this.

Detailed Event List - +

The event list lays out major boss abilities based on what time they occurred after the boss entered combat (denoted by [minutes:seconds], along with notes on how to identify or handle the mechanics. Once enough events have repeated to develop patterns, the patterns are noted below the event list. Numbers are based on a 20-man Heroic group.

For the Fallen Avatar, I've separated the events based on the two Stages.

Stage One - a slumber disturbed
Stage Two - an avatar awakened

Based on the Event List, we can assume the following:

  • Stage One - a slumber disturbed
    • Unbound Chaos occurs every 40-seconds, starting 10-seconds into the fight.
    • Corrupted Matrix activate every 40-seconds, start 10-seconds into the fight.
    • Touch of Sargeras occurs every 45-seconds, starting 15-seconds into the fight.
    • Shadowy Blades occurs every 40-seconds, starting 30-seconds into the fight.
    • Rupture Realities occurs every 60-seconds, starting 40-seconds into the fight.
    • Maiden of Valor reaches 100 energy every ~60-seconds.
  • Stage Two - an avatar awakened
    • Dark Mark occurs every 20-seconds, starting from the beginning of the Stage.
    • Rupture Realities occurs every 40-seconds, starting from the beginning of the Stage.

 DBM Settings

Below are the DBM settings I'll be using for Fallen Avatar. You can set them up however you'd like, but these ones should work well as a starting point. Some settings may be Mythic only.
